PARTS OF SPEECH OR PARTS OF A SENTENCE OR CLASSIFICATION OF WORDS

PARTS  OF  SPEECH OR  PARTS  OF  A  SENTENCE  OR  CLASSIFICATION OF WORDS

Lesson 3

INTRODUCTION

Learning a language means learning it's grammar.

In lesson no.  2 we have already  understood the sounds in english language which are formed when two letters or alphabets come together.  Now the next step is what happens when more than one or two sounds come together in a sequence ?  You are right ,  'words' ,  cluster of letters in particular pattern ,  are formed which generally have meaning.  eg.  a-n-d  together make a word ,'and', which is made of three sounds basically.

Now,  all these  words can be classified as following ;-

1.    Nouns  :-   These words are names of any thing, person , place, animal or any abstract feeling or                                  thought .

Eg.  boy, pencil, ball, bear, garden, love, hatred.

Generally we use articles before these nouns to specify them as single or many .

Eg.  a ball,  a  boy,  a garden  etc. This means  that the boy, ball and garden are single or one in number.

Note :- When we come across    the nouns  starting with vowel sound , then instead of 'a' , we must use 'an' before that   noun.

Eg. an ear,  an eye,  an owl,  an angle etc.

Again note,  we must focus on sound of   the  first letter of such nouns and not  mere letters

eg.  a University (sound is 'yu'),  an    hour  (sound is not 'ha', it is 'aa').Hope this is clear about basic nouns .

One more thing 'a',    'an,  are used for only  countable nouns and not uncountable nouns . Uncountable nouns    do not  carry articles before them. Eg.  water , air, money etc. 'The' is another article which                         is  a definite article used with particular nouns . Eg. The ball  , which means    that particular ball we are talking about and not any ball.

So, a ball  - means any ball

The ball  - means that particular ball.

Important : we never use indefinite articles to proper names or proper nouns

Eg.  a boy  - correct

      the boy - corect

       a Ram - incorrect

     the Ram  -  incorrect

We always start proper nouns with capital letterr or upper case letter eg.  Mr. John, Renuka, Simi etc.

Also we do use articles before abstract nouns ( feelings, thoughts, ideas etc)

Eg.   a democracy,  an envy, a doubt etc.

We never use indefinite articles before plural nouns ( many eg. boy - boys)

Eg.   a boy - correct

         a boys - incorrect

Plural nouns are always used without  indefinite articles.

However, definite article can be used before plural nouns

Eg. the trees , the boys, the books, the pens etc.

when we talk about particular plural nouns together.

I think this was all about nouns and usage along with rules.

In next lesson we will talk about next part of the speech that is 'Pronouns'.

Till then bye....
